1. Tell me a little bit about you, who is Malyn outside of work?

I am a 1st generation Cambodian-American from a family of immigrants and refugees. My family escaped Cambodia during a time of war (Vietnam war era) as well as a genocide during the Pol Pot Regime. I am the oldest of my siblings, wifey to my husband, and fur mama to my 3 dogs! I am passionate about mental health and self-care, especially after being officially diagnosed with PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). I am also interested in breaking away from and healing intergenerational traumas.

2. What do you do for work?

I create safe spaces where people feel welcomed and happy! But I guess by title, I am an Owner and Director of Operations of Pochi Bubble Tea Café aka best job ever! I also have a small Etsy shop where I sell stickers and Bubble Tea related merchandise.

3. As a female and small business owner, what are some of the biggest obstacles you have faced within your industry / the workplace?

As a female who has male business partners, I often see assumptions made about the hierarchy of our decision power as owners. Things like people assuming I do not have any of the decision-making authority, to not making eye contact with me, to only directing questions at my business partners or even acting like I am not there. However, I let my work and what I do speak for itself!

As a small business owner, in general, I think some of the biggest obstacles are like many of those in the restaurant industry right now. One of those challenges being the pandemic and how to navigate business during this time while still being mindful of the experience of our employees and customers. I know many are struggling or having a really difficult time. Others are burning out or feeling fatigued in so many areas of their lives right now. I want to make sure we can run our store in a way that keeps that all in mind. However, it’s a delicate balance for sure.

 4. What women in your life inspire you and why?

All the women in my family! The women in my family are powerhouses. They wear all the hats and are the ones who have taught me how to be strong. They go after what they want despite any challenges they may face while balancing full-time jobs, side hustles, families, etc. It’s amazing and so inspiring.

5. What advice would you give to women who want to pursue a new life direction -- whether that be moving to a new city, pursuing a new career path, starting a side hustle or choosing a new major in school?

You will always find your way! Set aside the doubts, because even if it does not end up being something for you, at least you know and are able to learn from the experience. This is how you grow!

6. How do you balance a job, personal life and passions? Is there such a thing as balance?

I think balancing all your priorities in life is like juggling something in real life, right?? You juggle it and sometimes one thing will fall or all of it will fall. You just need to pick it all up and start juggling again. And the more you do it, the better you get.

In all seriousness, though, I believe you need to get clear on what your priorities are and why. Then, look at how all of that may look like realistically in your daily life. Our dreams and goals may not always align in the moment with what we can realistically do physically, mentally, or emotionally. When we try to do it all and do it all the time, that’s when we burn out. Believe me, I have been there before and have learned to prioritize rest and self-care.

7. What are some ways you implement self-care?

For me, self-care can look like getting massages, getting my hair done, or going shopping. Other times, it’s taking a day off to literally do nothing and give my brain rest. Or it may look like doing all the chores I have been putting off at home, so things like laundry, cleaning the house, doing the dishes, etc. Or it is making sure to schedule therapy sessions or time to catch up with friends. I also like to make sure there is some sort of self-care incorporated into my daily routine whether it is making sure I eat or setting aside me-time or unplugging for a little bit. Listening to your body is also important. Get enough sleep every night (and not guilting yourself if you need more rest than usual!).

8. What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders, movers and shakers?

Surround yourself with GOOD people. People who inspire you, are doing better than you, or cheer you on no matter what! Having a strong support system can make all the difference.

9. How can women advocate for each other?

Stop competing with other women and accept that when we support each other, it’s a win for all women. Cultivate and develop strong relationships with other women. Show your support for other women whether it is engaging with their social media content or making the decision to purchase something from their business. When they are killing it in their field or you are feeling so inspired by them, let them know!! Words can be powerful, especially affirming and encouraging words.

10. What is your power color and why?

I would have to say a nice dark tan/burnt orange color. It’s vibrant and fun but neutral enough to pair with my other power color, black.

11. What is your female anthem – the song that hypes you up and makes you feel like a girl boss and that you can take on anything in the world?

I don’t know if this would be considered an anthem but it’s so good! No Scrubs by TLC. The way I see it, it’s not just about saying bye to the scrubs but saying bye to the things that don’t serve you. Plus, it’s such a good song!
